Everyone who’s ever played it agrees: character creation on City of Heroes is addictive. Granted, most gamers have alts–different character classes and whatnot. But throw in the opportunity to create another costume…

I’m still playing Andromeda as my primary, although last night’s 600+ experience debt thanks to a team up with TOTAL FREAKING MORONS left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. Seriously, people, the purpose of teaming? Lowering our collective chance of death. Things that do not lower that collective chance: Tanking when you are not a tanker, tanking when you are in fact the FREAKING DEFENDER (healer) and failing to actually HEAL anyone, running around like a chicken with its head cut off and getting every mob in the mission area to converge on our party at once. Yeah.

Anyway, tonight I played my Defender character and leveled up twice, which wasn’t too bad, although of course she’s still pretty low. I have “Resurrect” now, though (yes, the ability to raise people from the “dead”–although City of Heroes is very careful never to use that word), which should make me popular, hopefully with people who are not total idiots.

So, check it out, my current stable of characters:

Name: The Amazing Artemis
Concept: When I was Super Dyke for Halloween in high school (I had a plaid flannel cape and combat boots), my friend Amanda was my sidekick, the Amazing Artemis. It seemed like a fun idea. She has “trick arrow” as her secondary power pool.
Class: Controller
Level: 5
Server: Pinnacle

Name: Marie LeVeau
Concept: Marie LaVeau, the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans. Correct spelling was taken. Character created before I realized that you could unlink colors and use more than two of them in costume creation, which is why her hair is green. She can do “Spectral Wounds.”
Class: Controller
Level: 3
Server: Infinity

Name: The Witch o Westmerlands
Concept: Archie Fisher wrote a ballad in the traditional mode–not actually a traditional ballad, mind you, just styled like one–about a knight wounded in battle who is healed by the Witch of the West-mer-lands. Unfortunately, that was too many characters. Technically should have had the lower body of a black mare, but that wasn’t possible, either.

Level: 7
Server: Justice

Name: Achryn
Concept: Achren was the evil sorceress queen turned penitent martyr of the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander. Correct spelling was taken. Note: Whenever I see an avatar that looks like this in-game, I assume it is being played by a guy. What can I say, though; it seemed appropriate.
Class: Controller
Level: 2

Name: Andromeda Sparks
Concept: My first pass at a superheroine. Still my favorite, still my primary. Come on, HOW AWESOME is that costume? And she ZAPS things.

And there you are. All chicks, you might note. I don’t know, I just like being female. And I have to admit, I enjoy watching comic book women running around. They say that’s one reason male players so frequently gender-swap with their avatars; is it evil and patriarchal when I do it?
