you’ll just have to take my word for it
Inside Job by Connie Willis is so short that I can’t really say anything about the story without ruining it for you. Actually, don’t scroll down on that Amazon page if you don’t want the story ruined for you, either. At least the publisher had the good sense to limit the jacket blurb to a couple of cryptic sentences.
Anyway, I will say that it’s fun near-future kind-of-fantasy, Willis’s writing is good as usual, and it made me smile and laugh. Bellwether is still my absolute favorite of her work, but give this one a try.

You don’t come across her work much in Britain. I recently bought The Doomsday Book as an American import, mostly because I’ve heard good things about her on LJ, but haven’t had time to read it yet. In the meantime I came across her short story “Even the Queen” in the collection A Woman’s Liberation, and thought it was genius, so am very much looking forward to reading more of her.

I find her short stories to be a little hit or miss, but I’ve really liked all her novellas/novels. The Doomsday Book is good, but kind of oddly serious for her. You should also try To Say Nothing of the Dog if you want to see some of her more humorous stuff.
